A Level Two Inquiry Assignment: Collecting Data and Using it to Make Predictions

Technology incorporated: EcoLog XL sensors

Mrs. B. had her students construct weather stations.

Using directions from various sources including Power of Science and Spotlight on Science kits, groups of students constructed equipment, then collected weather data for a week.

Students recorded:

temperature with Sensors or thermometers

barometric pressure (high or low) with barometers made from mason jars, balloons, straws, paperclips, and index cards

precipitation with rain guages they made from straws. paperclips,a nd index cards

wind speed from an index card and coffee stirrer

wind direction from wind vanes they made with

visibilty, and any other observations (like clouds)

After a week, students then used this data to predict the next day's weather and represent it on a weather map.
